Studio
Overview
Studio Rasa Kolkata is an architectural and interior design practice based in Kolkata, West Bengal. Founded as a collective of visual philosophers and designers, we take on comprehensive residential, hospitality, commercial, and cultural projects. We travel globally for work, seeking contexts where traditional craftsmanship can be woven into contemporary spatial narratives.
The Meaning of Rasa
In ancient aesthetic theory, Rasa is the essence of an experience. It is the invisible thread connecting atmosphere, emotion, memory, and sensory perception into a singular spatial reality.

Sanjib Saha
Founder, Studio Rasa Kolkata
I came to interior design through art. My training in Fine Arts at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, taught me to observe light, proportion, texture, colour and emotion. Over two decades of practice, including my role as Co-founder and Design Head of J&S Interiors, I have worked across homes, hospitality, workplaces and cultural spaces. One belief has stayed constant: good design begins with listening.
My inspiration comes from everyday life — the red-oxide floor of an old house, a khorkhori window, courtyard shadows, a handwritten sign, a Battala print, terracotta textures, or the marks left by a craftsperson's hand. These matter more to me than trends.
Working with artisans and young artists has been important to my practice. Their knowledge comes from experience, not catalogues. Projects like Chaudhury and Company allowed these memories of Kolkata to become part of a contemporary space without turning them into decoration.
Travel has also shaped my thinking. From visiting rural Bengal during my youth to journeys through Rajasthan, Khajuraho, Hampi, and global cities like Milan, Copenhagen and Paris, these experiences reinforced that design grows from climate, materials, rituals and daily life.
“I do not travel to collect ideas, but to understand them. For me, heritage is not a style — it is knowledge built over time.”
Studio Rasa Kolkata was created to explore these ideas — not just how a space looks, but what it feels like and what it remembers. “Rasa” refers to an essence that is felt, not just seen. It is a practice where Indian aesthetics, memory, materials, art, craft and everyday life meet contemporary design.
At its core, Studio Rasa Kolkata continues to evolve as an identity — one that sees design as a responsibility as much as a practice, engaging as a custodian of culture, a visual thinker, and a rasa-based design practitioner.

How We Work
Discovery — understanding the brief, the site, and the budget.
Direction — a design strategy and material direction the client signs off on.
Design Development — 3D-layouts, materials, furniture, lighting and art, resolved in detail.
Documentation and Coordination — drawings, vendors, contractors, approvals.
Installation and Completion — furniture, art, styling, final review, photography.
Typical project duration ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on scale. We serve clients across India and internationally. While we specialize in holistic, turn-key architecture and interiors, we occasionally take on partial-scope styling and art direction.
